Radio Rhizome 2023

Sound Installation adaptation for Internal Spaces, 38 channel Sound, Collaboration with Nooshin Hakim Javadi, Site Specific Project for the Exhibition “Betting on The Sun,” Size 48”x62”, Radios and Radio Transmitter

This iteration of Radio-Rhizome is an internal space adaptation of the soundscapes conducted on Anishinaabe Nation treaty lands and ancestral territories , where oil pipelines, industrial toxin spillage, and easements have endangered both human and nonhuman life, as well as the water bodies, soil, and Indigenous livelihoods and the right to the land.   What is displayed in this show is the formation of a 38-channel radio transmitting sound installation. This system is utilized in much larger numbers upon the mentioned lands, framing the landscape and placing it into a sonic context. The sound played in this iteration stems from sound samples of the sites impacted by environmental issues across the Anishinaabe Nation’s traditional territories, sound art pieces, poems, spoken word performances, indigenous ceremonies, and interviews on what water bodies and the land mean to them.

The sound installation is a body-responsive work (interactive) which reacts to the audience by being distorted and less clear as the audience moves closer to it.
